Poodles have been used for many tasks over the centuries.  Traditional jobs included Duck Hunting and Truffle Hunting.  While this work has continued, new work has been added to the list of things that poodles do for their owners.  One of the new tasks is herding. 

The two dogs on this page both do real work and love it.

There are herding events, tests and trials, that test the dog’s ability to move and control cattle or sheep.  The dog’s work is timed and includes the outrun, and driving or fetching the cattle or sheep.

Both of the following organizations allow poodles of all varieties compete at the Trial level and ultimately earn a Herding Championship. The first two levels in AHBA (HCT & JHD) and the first level in CKC (HT) are Certificate levels and are judged on a pass-fail.  All higher levels are based on a point system resulting in either NQ or a leg toward a title.

Driving or fetching the sheep in a nice orderly way is the objective.

On the farm, the sheep are herded in order to get work done.
